PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
The course presents treatment providers with adolescent specific treatment
themes, understanding that adolescents must be approached differently than
adults because of their unique developmental issues, differences in their
values and belief systems, and unique environmental considerations. Adolescent
substance use disorders have far-reaching social and economic ramifications and
are a topic worthy of attention with regard to improving clinical skills.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course is presented in programmed-learning module that focuses on the
growing problem of substance abuse within the adolescent population and is
applicable to certified or licensed addiction and counseling professionals
working in inpatient or outpatient settings. Additional material will address
treatment decisions and details for successful programs, with emphasis on
approaches used in 12-Step-based programs, therapeutic communities, and family
therapy.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Counselor will describe the role of the 12 Step principles in treating
adolescents.
2. Counselor will identify distinctive treatment needs for youths with
coexisting problems.
3. Counselor will understand treatment protocols for residential treatment.
4. Counselor will recall patient placement assessment issues specific to
adolescents.
5. Counselor will explain the purpose of a therapeutic community (TC).
6. Counselor will be able to distinguish between different types of family
therapy.
7. Counselor will describe the moral, psychosexual, and cognitive development
themes for adolescents.
