PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This workbook will impart knowledge specific to brief intervention techniques that have been found effective in addressing the substance abuse issues of clients who are unable or unwilling to access specialty care. Brief interventions are research-proven procedures for working with individuals with at-risk use and less severe abuse behaviors.


COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course will target how brief interventions and brief therapies have become increasingly important modalities in the treatment of individuals across the substance abuse continuum. Brief therapies can be used to effect significant changes in clients' behaviors and their understanding of them.


EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Understand the Stages-of-Change model.
2. Identify the goals and components of a brief intervention.
3. Recall the meaning of the acronym "FRAMES.".
4. Recite the essential knowledges and skills for brief interventions.
5. Acquire skills to identify when to use brief therapy.
6. State the purpose and components of brief therapy.
7. Describe the characteristics of a successful therapist.
8. Recall several different models of treatment.
