PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
The course is designed to introduce the reader to skills associated with
Cognitive-Behavioral Treatment of Cocaine Addiction (CBT). This model of
treatment has been extensively evaluated in rigorous clinical trials and has
solid empirical support as treatment for cocaine abuse. The underlying
assumption is that learning processes play an important role in the development
and continuation of cocaine abuse and dependence. These same learning processes
can be used to help individuals reduce their drug use
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course is presented in programmed-learning module that focuses on the
cognitive-behavioral treatment of cocaine addiction and how this short-term,
focused approach can help cocaine-dependent individuals become abstinent from
cocaine and other substances.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Counselor will define the basic principles of a cognitive-behavioral
approach
2. Counselor will identify the various parameters of CBT
3. Counselor will understand the roles of a functional analysis and skills
training
4. Counselor will acknowledge how CBT compares to other treatments and
modalities
5. Counselor will learn and recall the structure and format of individual
sessions
