PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
The purpose of this program is to assist counselors in the enhancement of their
multicultural counseling skills. It builds awareness of one's own culture and
other cultures, and how culture influences one's personality and lifestyle. The
program guides the professional to implement what has been learned about
working with culturally different people.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This program presents a variety of perspectives on topics needed by counselors
working in a culturally diverse society. Both cognitive and affective
components are addressed in developing multicultural counseling skills. The
workbook builds on and operationalizes the work of many scholars in diversity
training and multicultural counseling. Focus is on the process of attaining
multicultural counseling competence.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Counselor will examine the concept of cultural diversity in counseling.
2. Counselor will analyze personal perceptions on diversity.
3. Counselor will develop a foundation of knowledge regarding particular ethnic
groups.
4. Counselor will develop behavior that reflects cultural awareness and
sensitivity towards individuals.
5. Counselor will examine culturally appropriate intervention strategies.
6. Counselors will create a personal action plan for valuing diversity.
