PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This workbook will examine the relationship between domestic violence and
substance abuse. This startling and devastating clinical presentation is
becoming more and more prevalent, necessitating improved clinical skills in the
area of assessment, treatment and referral. The ability to both recognize the
presence of domestic violence as well as demonstrating skills in interviewing
the batterer and survivor are two of several goals of this course.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course examines the relationship between substance abuse and domestic
violence. A broad area of topics will contribute to highlighting the problems
facing clinicians dealing with this population, as well as offering sound
treatment and referral recommendations for clients. The student will thoroughly
read and complete all of the workbook requirements and tasks. The workbook is
fashioned in such a way that questions necessary to pass the post test are
imbedded within the training content. This style of learning has shown to
improve retention and recall. The post-test is the final task for the student
and the final grade is contingent upon achieving a grade of greater than 75% on
the test. The student will then complete an evaluation of the workbook tasks
along with any recommendations.

3. Recall the characteristics of a survivor of domestic violence
4. Recall the characteristics of a domestic violence batterer
5. Acquire skills necessary to plan treatment for the substance abuse client
6. State the role of anger in the clinical profile of the batterer
7. Identify the group typologies of the batterer
8. Understand the Deluth Model
9. Identify screening methods for survivors and batterers
