PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This training provides an overview of the purpose and goals for dual diagnosis treatment and provides professional with information to assist in both the assessment and referral of dually diagnosed client. The training focuses on themes and issues that warrant dual diagnosis treatment and the student is introduced to various paradigms of treatment approaches for the psychiatrically ill addicted client. With the drive towards integrated behavioral delivery systems, chemical dependency counselors need to be more aware of dual diagnosis treatment issues.


COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course provides an in-depth introduction to concepts, treatment issues and assessment concerns that challenges todays addiction professionals. Philosophical and treatment issues are addressed via a programmed learning module. Students will be given pretest to establish a baseline of understanding with dual diagnosis issues. The didactic content additionally includes definitions, explanations and examples of key concepts as well as opportunities to test knowledge and retention via questions throughout the course. The post-test will finish the course and the final grade is contingent upon achieving a grade of greater than 75% on the test. The student will then be asked to critique the course and suggest any recommendations.


INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
Home study course using a programmed learning workbook that challenges the student to recall and retain information throughout the workbook.


EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Understand major philosophical and treatment issues of dual diagnosis.
2. Recall similarities and differences between addiction and psychiatric delivery systems.
3. Will understand the case management model versus the Individual Responsibility model for patient management.
4. Demonstrate understanding of the three dual disorder treatment models.
5. Acquire skills necessary to enhance their assessment process.
