PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
The course is fashioned to render the student with an understanding of
principles and concepts of Ethical standards for professional conduct and
behavior. It is fashioned using national and state ethical codes that are
universally recognized as applicable. Through the use of case vignettes,
students are challenged to understand critical issues of dual relationships,
boundary concerns and confidentiality themes.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course is presented in programmed-learning module that addresses Ethical
standards in addiction treatment for Certified or Licensed addiction
professionals (and those in training) in both inpatient or outpatient settings.
A pretest will help determine areas understanding and those areas requiring a
refresher or new knowledge. Completion of the programmed workbook will then
follow, with a format that concentrates on commonly accepted rules of
professional conduct throughout the country. Pragmatic relationships between
the individual standards for conduct, and potential real-life situations will
accentuate the training and solidify understanding of ethical standards for
professional behavior. The post-test will be the final task for the student and
the final grade is reached by achieving a minimum grade of 75 percent. A course
evaluation will be administered prior to issuance of the completion
certificate, soliciting any comments or recommendations for improvement.

1. Student will comprehend the role of confidentiality with Ethics.
2. Student will identify common unethical behaviors occurring with addiction
professionals.
3. Student will develop appropriate responses to moral or ethical dilemmas.
4. Student will understand the concept of dual relationships and implications
for counselors.
5. Student will recognize situations that constitute a duty to warn.
