PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This Home study module will address the many controversial issues surrounding
the use of Methadone in the treatment of the chronically addicted opiate
addict. The training will attempt to provide factual data to assist the
addictions professional in competently discussing the uses and rationale for
using methadone, and to examine the ramifications that personal biases and
moral values can have in appropriate placement and recommendation.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course presents a programmed training module that challenges the addiction
professional to reexamine personal values and beliefs regarding the Methadone
Maintenance treatment modalities, as well as providing factual historical
information. Completion of the programmed workbook will then follow, presenting
a history of opiate addiction in the U.S., subsequent measures to treat
addiction, including methadone, and pharmacological and treatment tips specific
to methadone maintenance. The post-test will be the final task for the student
and the final grade is reached by achieving a minimum grade of 75 percent.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: The workbook readings, assigned tasks and programmed questioning on content constitute the bulk of the training module, as well as the instructors critique and feedback. A brief bibliography is included to provide additional resources for the student in the area of Methadone Maintenance.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Addiction professional will examine attitudes and values that influence
their perceptions of Methadone maintenance treatment
2. Addiction professional will recall historical events and research studies
that contributed to the current controversy with the use of Methadone
3. Addiction professional will recognize the various types of medications that
can interact with Methadone
4. Addiction professional will understand the common myths and misbeliefs
attributed to methadone.
