Goals & Objectives of Education Offering

PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This training will introduce the reader to the psychiatric mood disorders clinicians face in their daily practices. Mood disorders range from the "low" of severe depression to the "high" of mania.


COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This workbook will summarize the current research on the history, genetics, and gender differences of affective disorders. The focus is the on four primary disorders: (1) major depressive disorder, (2) dysthymia, (3) bipolar disorder, and (4) cyclothymia. In addition to explaining the diagnostic criteria for each disorder, we emphasize the similarities and differences among them.


EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Counselor will identify factors that contribute to various mood disorders.
2. Counselor will recognize similarities and differences in mood disorders.
3. Counselor will recall the relationship between mood disorders and substance abuse.
4. Counselor will learn how to develop treatment plans for clients with mood disorders.
5. Counselor will discern gender differences related to mood disorders.
6. Counselor will understand the different types of co-occurring illnesses.
7. Counselor will identify diagnostic criteria specific to different mood disorders.
