PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This course is designed to impart knowledge specific to the concept of
motivation and how substance abuse treatment staff can influence change by
developing a therapeutic relationship that respects and builds on the client's
autonomy and, at the same time, makes the treatment clinician a partner in the
change process.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course will focus on both theory and application related to motivational
counseling and interviewing. Counselors will be given pretest to determine
areas of liabilities with their understanding of motivational counseling, as
well as identifying areas of strength. The content includes stages of change
and specific techniques to enhance skills in the area of interviewing and
counseling, and opportunities to test knowledge and retention via questions
throughout the workbook.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Recall the stages of change model.
2. Identify situations that may warrant motivational interviewing.
3. Understand the role of healthy and destructive confrontation.
4. Acquire skills necessary to perform brief interventions.
5. Define the elements of a motivational intervention.
6. Learn strategies for opening a new session.
7. Describe several ways to integrate motivational interviewing in a treatment
program.
