PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This course is devised to equip the student with an anchored understanding of
the Mental Status Assessment administered in addiction treatment settings. It
will provide both didactic information as well as the opportunity to better
understand the concepts and ingredients of a Mental Status Assessment as well
as developing the skills to better assess the mental status of a client and
making appropriate referrals and consultations when indicated. In an era of an
ever changing and evolving client profile, and the move towards an integrated
behavioral service delivery system, addiction counselors are challenged to
heighten their knowledge in this area.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course addresses the understanding the role of Mental Status Assessment in
Addiction treatment settings, inpatient or outpatient. Students will be given
pretest to determine areas of liabilities with the your understanding of a
Mental Status Exam, as well as identifying areas of strength. The student will
be asked to thoroughly read and highlight, and review the workbook reading
requirements, answering all questions. The content includes psychiatric
definitions, explanations and examples of key concepts as well as opportunities
to test knowledge and retention via questions throughout the workbook. The
post-test is the final task for the student and the final grade is contingent
upon achieving a grade of greater than 75% on the post-test. The student will
then be given a critique of the workbook tasks along with any recommendations.

1. Recall the essential components of a Mental Status Assessment .
2. Identify situations that may warrant a psychiatric evaluation.
3. Understand implications for chemically dependent clients and the Mental
Status Assessment.
4. Acquire skills necessary to understand a Mental Status Exam.
