PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
The course presents treatment providers with much-needed information about a
population that is underdiagnosed and underserved.. The workbook addresses the
relationship between aging and substance abuse and offers guidance on
identifying, screening, and assessing not only substance abuse but also
disorders such as dementia and delirium that can mask or mimic an alcohol or
prescription drug problem
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course is presented in a programmed-learning module that focuses on the
growing problem of substance abuse with the elderly and is applicable to
certified or licensed addiction and counseling professionals working in
inpatient or outpatient settings. A pretest will establish a baseline of
understanding as well as targeting those areas requiring a refresher or new
knowledge. The programmed workbook address age-specific group treatment that is
supportive and nonconfrontational, aiming to build or rebuild the patient's
self-esteem. Additional focus is directed towards rebuilding the client's
social support network.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Counselor will describe the purpose of screening and various instruments
used.
2. Counselor will identify assessment instruments used with older adults.
3. Counselor will understand skills used in assessment comorbid disorders.
4. Counselor will recall the means to assess functional abilities.
5. Counselor will understand the difference between dementia and delirium.
6. Counselor will differentiate between referral and treatment approaches.
7. Counselor will explain patient placement and matching with older adults.
8. Counselor will distinguish age-specific treatment issues.
9. Counselor will summarize case management and outreach approaches with older
adults.
