Goals & Objectives of Education Offering

PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This descriptive course is designed to provide the addiction counselor useful clinical and practical information specific to the personality disordered client. Given the increasing complexity in the addicted client profile, and the inherent difficulties in working with personality disordered clients, it is the goal of this training to impart skills that will facilitate the treatment process.


COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course is presented in a programmed learning module, and provides a detailed examination of the current personality disorders. Attentions is given to purposeful examples and clinical situations that will hopefully provide clinicians with additional skills in the clinical arena. The workbook contains tasks and questions that are completed by the student, and includes areas surrounding individual and group therapy techniques, indications for medications and implications for 12 step meeting attendance. A pre and post test are administered as a means of evaluation. The post-test is the final task for the student and a passing grade is achieved with a minimum grade of 75 percent. All students are required to complete a course evaluation.


INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS: As indicated above, the training is a self-paced, home study module, using a programmed style workbook. Learning theory has demonstrated that retention and recall can be enhanced via the use of repetition and review, both of which are facets of this style of learning.


EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Counselor will recall the major diagnostic features of the personality disorders.
2. Counselor will differentiate between personality disorders, traits and types.
3. Counselor will understand the classification system for personality disorders.
4. Counselor will describe the style of individual counseling specific to personality disorders.
5. Counselor will recall the treatment modalities most effective for each of the personality disordered addicted client.
6. Counselor will identify precautions and indications for the use of medications with this population.
