PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This course is designed to provide the student with a fundamental understanding
of health-related issues and illnesses that are critical to know by all persons
working in addiction treatment settings. This course was developed in response
to the increasing changes in the addicted client profile and the necessity for
all addiction setting employees to be more cognizant of Sexually transmitted
Diseases (STDs), Tuberculosis (TB) and other related health issues when working
with high risk clients.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This programmed learning module will examine a number of illnesses and
afflictions that a prevalent in addiction treatment settings as well as
preventative measures to avoid risk to addiction setting employees. Each
student will complete a pre-test that can provide a baseline of their
understanding of these health issues. This pre-test will also identify areas
that need strengthening with regard to their knowledge base. Sexually
Transmitted diseases and preventative measures will be thoroughly covered.
Additional information will be presented on Tuberculosis and several types of
Hepatitis. Modes of transmission, high risk populations and treatment and
prevention strategies are addressed with each disease. Throughout the workbook,
there will be questions following different content areas that are designed to
help the student improve retention of the material presented. This recollection
of material learned will be operationally measured on the post-test.
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS:
As indicated above, the workbook readings and assigned tasks constitute the
bulk of the training needs, as well as the instructors critique and feedback. A
brief bibliography is included to provide additional resources for the student
in the area of STDs, AIDS, TB and other health related issues, along with
toll-free numbers for information.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Heighten understanding of communicable diseases and their implications in
addiction settings.
2. Gain knowledge about preventative measures for the spread of STDs
3. Differentiate between the different types of hepatitis.
4. Understand the proper use of condoms.
5. Recognize symptoms associated with Tuberculosis
