PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This workbook will examine a number of relevant processes and theories related
to group counseling. Following this review will be specific counseling
techniques and gimmicks that can be helpful in a group setting. Several group
exercises will also be presented that can augment a counselor's clinical
repertoire.
COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course will address historical theories of group counseling, including
different types of groups and their purposes. The importance of content and
process, along with the role of feedback, will follow. The second half of the
training will highlight facilitative counseling techniques and gimmicks. The
reader will read and complete all of the workbook requirements and tasks. The
workbook is fashioned in such a way that questions necessary to pass the post
test are imbedded within the training content. This style of learning has been
shown to improve retention and recall. The post test is the final task, and the
final grade is contingent upon achieving a test grade greater than 70%. The
counselor will then complete an evaluation of the workbook tasks along with any
recommendations.

1. Understand the role of content and process in group counseling.
2. Identify the importance of feedback, both positive and negative.
3. Recall the different types and purposes of a group.
4. Recall several goals of group counseling.
5. Acquire skills necessary to conduct several groups addressed in this
training.
6. State the purpose and intent of the Counselor Verbal Response Scale.
