PURPOSE OF PRESENTATION:
This training will focus on three different counseling disciplines that can effectively be used in chemical dependency treatment. An in-depth analysis of psychoanalytic, cognitive, and reality therapies will look at the key concepts of each of these disciplines and assist counselors with the practical application of these approaches to addiction counseling.


COURSE CONTENT AND DESCRIPTION:
This course presents an overview of the three selected disciplines through a programmed training module. The psychoanalytic section examines this discipline from two perspectives, as a model of behavior and as a method of therapy. The cognitive discipline is addressed with the overview of three specific therapies, Adlerian, Logotherapy, and Beck's Cognitive Therapy. Reality therapy is the third selected discipline to be addressed in this training. Key concepts, specific techniques, therapeutic relationship, application, limitations, and contributions are highlighted topics within each section.


EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Counselor will understand the principles of behavior from a psychoanalytic perspective.
2. Counselor will recognize psychoanalytic techniques and concepts.
3. Counselor will recall focal differences between the three presented disciplines.
4. Counselor will describe the four phases of Adlerian therapy.
5. Counselor will recognize and label specific cognitive distortions.
6. Counselor will understand logotherapy's premise that the primary motivational factor for an individual is the need for striving and finding meaning in one's life.
7. Counselor will identify key concepts of reality therapy including the total behavior and choice theory.
8. Counselor will recognize how the concepts of reality therapy apply to chemical dependency treatment.
